Being sick as a kid in the 80's be like

The older kids were jealous of the youngest because the youngest got to ride standing up in the car between Mom and Dad. But sometimes the older ones got to ride in the open pickup bed.

Most parents in the 50’s - 60’s at least occasionally used paregoric (morphine derivative) when somebody was teething or just simply would not go to sleep.

It was a symbol of the greatest mark of brotherly love if big bro let you ride in the basket on the bike, or on the fender.

Horrifying now, but back then it was just Saturday.

@SW-User Funny and a far cry from today - less than ideal in some ways...but in some ways good to instill independence...

Not me, I was packed off to school unless I was hemorrhaging and about to have a massive neural shutdown. My mum's answer if ever my boys were ill was always "give him a drop of sherry he'll be grand"
My mum was a nurse.

We had to be GENUINELY sick to get to stay home.
She could suss out any fake sickie 😣

...and even if you were genuinely sick, her empathy-o-meter was set so high due to her job you had to make ur own chicken noodle soup 😩
