@meggie I used kerosene heaters for a long time. If lit outside the door and allowed to warm up the smells is greatly reduced. The lighting and extinguishing is what is the strongest

@cherokeepatti Actually I remember them from Maryland and North

@Gibbon I remember seeing them in news reports when there were freezes in Florida. They set these out in the orange groves and lit them to keep the fruit from freezing.

@Gibbon Not true - we keep them in the back of the farm trucks and tractors. They out live road flairs

@HumanEarth I was only thinking about the road crews. I guess farms make sense that's where the idea came from since on a larger size they where used to protect citrus tree crops and vineyards from freezing temperatures

My great grand relatives would use a bunch of these all over place. For lighting, for heat (when used in large numbers) when used with a piece of sheet metal to keep animals warm. I heard all kinds of uses my family used these for

@4meAndyou for most of us not on a farm it was most likely to see them on the road around road work or an accident before battery operated lights and flares were primarily used

@Gibbon I did spend every summer on my Grandfather's farm in Nebraska...so maybe that's there where and when.

@4meAndyou They were supplanted by the visiflash sawhorses around here. Set up along with or in lieu of orange barrels around road construction.
