The marketplace determines the minimum wage. When govt intervenes it causes problems.

About 2 years ago, D.C. passed a law raising minimum wage to $18 if I recall correctly. Walmart responded by shutting down 2 superwalmarts and a few neighborhood stores.
They only left one store in the city.

And San Francisco did the same thing 2,3 years ago in the restaurant industry. Dozens of restaurants shut down because they could not afford to pay all their employees the higher wages, especially waitresses. So, many of them went out of business. Many , many people lost their jobs. The ones that stayed in business made more money, because there was less competition. But not enough to hire the ones that were laid off. A few made more money at the expense of the few.

Government needs to stay out of private enterprise.
@DallasCowboysFan Breaking the Walmart monopoly that is destroying local businesses by deciding to not exploit workers. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Brilliant.

@JustGoneNow Well, if they feel like they are exploited, then they don't have to work there.
Some people lack motivation to do anything different.
There are a lot to people that work in WM that have 10, 15, 20 year badges.
I worked at WM for about a year. There are a lot of people working there that are content living paycheck to paycheck. They know they are barely getting by but they do nothing to change the situation or improve themselves.
@DallasCowboysFan oh, I’m sure. but that doesn’t give Walmart a right to exploit them.
@JustGoneNow Just so you know the Dallas Cowboys are a football team. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@Sojournersoul that one I knew. lol
@Sojournersoul hard to escape it.
@JustGoneNow Just being a helpful smartass

@DallasCowboysFan if an enterprise cant pay wages that allows people to live then that enterprise doesnt deserve to exist. its basically stealing tax money
@IlovePeaches in a truly healthy market, you don’t have to exploit workers to balance the books.

@JustGoneNow No one is forcing people to work at Walmart. It's not exploitation if employment is voluntary.
@HoraceGreenley we’ll just agree to disagree. be safe and be well.

@JustGoneNow The average large, Super Walmart employs about 450 people. When. new Walmart opens, they often have 2000 or 3000 applications. When you have that many people applying for a job, at prevailing wages, you don't need to raise your wage level.

No one is exploiting anyone. If employees don't like it, then they can find another job.
@DallasCowboysFan not always. in smaller communities (like not Dallas,) where a Walmart has run most small businesses out of work, there may not be other job choices. I realize particular markets change the calculus but my point is very valid. Corporate welfare of any type including holding down workers wages must stop for a truely heathy economy. Be safe and be well.
@DallasCowboysFan Wages at Walmart are so low, some ware on food stamps. So your taxes are indirectly contributing to Walmart’s profits. If you’re OK with that, you’re not a conservative, you’re just someone who worships big business.
@LeopoldBloom on many issues, I’m very conservative and this bugs me. I come from a very traditional, very rural, and very conservative state that typically votes majority red clear across the board and our state has increased the minimum wage far above the 7.50 national. I’m not big into having national force the minimum wage at all but shame on the 20 states that keep it there at the state level. It’s just wrong.
@DallasCowboysFan The same thing happened in Seattle as well. These dumbfucks act like small business and franchise owners can afford to pay every employee $25 an hour, and they can't they shouldn't be in business.

@DallasCowboysFan Oh noooo. IT's been shown the more Walmarts in an area the lower amount of other businesses and the higher the amount unemployment in repeated studies.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@MethDozer really. From my casual observation. In my area. Everywhere there is a WM. The superstores are doing well. It increases their foot traffic

@DallasCowboysFan Were talking about communities not just WallyWorlds bottom line.
