I am somewhere between 5 ft 7 and 5 ft 8.
When I lived in the New York, City suburbs I thought of myself as having average height, compared to those around me.
Then I moved to the Midwest, where the ethnic mix is quite different, and people referred to me as "short".
The only difference that affected my lifestyle is that it was difficult for me to find trousers that were short enough for me in Midwestern stores . But that's better now, because of an increase in the Latino population, who tend to be short and wear my size!

@helenS I can easily imagine that to be true!
I have a friend who used to be a high school wrestler. He went to Japan on business and visited the home of a business colleague. This colleague had two children who kept peeking into the room and running out giggling. When my friend asked what was going on, the colleague explained, "You have to understand. They have never met anyone as big as you before!"
