Quite consciously and frequently. The post-truth era has disturbed me greatly to see how much political bias or conspiracies can turn into unbelievably strong cognitive bias to the point of denying evidence. So I have to be honest with myself and step back from things I'm emotionally affected by - my world view, my politics, etc - and be prepared to look at it afresh.
I also review my 'trusted' sources - what media I'm looking at and where it steps from verifiable, factual reporting to just stirring up outrage or other emotions which is a trigger and call sign of manipulation, intended or otherwise.
I'm serious about this. If I can't put the beliefs I hold most dearly on the line and re-ask questions about them I might be no different to the people who think Sandy Hook was made up.
How good I am at it I don't know.
My principles - I ask questions but they're pretty solid. Always treat people with dignity. Always be honest. Don't betray people. Care about others, not just yourself and those who make you happy. Try to make a positive contribution to the world. Be responsible for my actions and apologise when I get it wrong... Anyone want to argue with these things?
