My workweek so far:

Monday, a person was switched from day crew to night because he couldn't work at the machines he was assigned to, and they had no room for him elsewhere. He was 67 years old, and they put him on machines that the 20 Somes can't even keep up with. 😐

No one had told me he was being switched. He just showed up. He had no idea where he was supposed to go.

None of the area leads or the supervisor on duty knew where he was supposed to go and didn't even know he was going to be there.

After an hour of going to department to department, I put him with a brand mew trainer who was excited to start training.

Then the trainer tells me that no one told the department area lead that one of the guys on night shift was switched to days, and she had scheduled him for a machine.

I was frustrated because the temp agency that placed him made us look stupid and unprofessional, and I had to waste time.

I waited till 3 am to send the email to the temp agency and the boss so that I was more removed from the emotion, but I was still upset.

Last night, I hear from the area lead of the department I put him in that she had been told he was making "extremely inappropriate comments" and that she hadn't said anything because she hadn't heard them first hand, but the trainer had.

I talked to the trainer and she didn't even want to talk about it at first, but then explained that he had called her a Hispanic slur, that he had called the factory a "Mexican sweatshop" and called another African American employee the n word and when she called him out, he claimed he didn't mean it as racist. She said to him, "How else can you mean that?!"

I was horrified! I told her that while I hope it doesn't, if it happens again, to come straight to me. I will get his badge and kick him off the property. I have zero tolerance for that bullshit.

I'm sorry, but a 67 year old white man has had plenty of opportunities in his life to be a better person. Instead, he took the lazy way and stayed a fucking racists.

We have all kinds of walks of life in the factory. Arabic, Nepali, Russian, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, El Salvadoran, Korean, Vietnamese, Brazilian, African America, and more. Whites are a minority on my shift. There is zero room for racist bullshit on my shift.

So excuse me when I have issues with men. It seems when they have every opportunity to be amazing and wonderful, they willfully chose to be absolute rotted garbage.

This single man negatively impacted 6 people in less than 24 hours. I hope he chokes alone. Not at all sorry. He should quit being shitty.

Wish I could say that was shocking but had to deal with episodes like that myself. But 67 and working out of a temp agency? I have the feeling that this isn’t his first rodeo.

@SageWanderer tbf, the temp agency is about the only way to get your foot in the door at my work, unless you have experience, adegree and are looking for a desk job. It is like that for a lot of larger companies. If you aren't willing to work temp, you probably will never get into the larger places. It's been that way since I was in my late 20's.

I just wonder if they were tolerating that behavior on the day shift so he felt it would be accepted on my shift.

@FoxyGoddess That’s a question I would want answered. If so, your workplace is more tolerant than mine was.

@SageWanderer Well, the Area lead didn’t take the trainer's experience seriously when she was told because she "didn't hear it directly" and is in desperate need of people working on the line. Since he was put on the hardest machines in the factory, I'm sure they swallowed the bile if he just kept showing up, but I have been told there are numerous people who should have been fired ages ago and are still there. One of the issues of having a factory way outside the metro sprawl. No one will travel in for the mediocre wages and they've already run through everyone local who can work. Amazon has similar issues with their warehouse workers.
There's clearly no reason for him to still be there, I wonder how long it's going to take for him to be gone.

And then the other issue ... what abysmal communication there is between the shifts. Any time anyone ever offfers the private sector as an example beacon of efficiency / competence / innovation / etc., and then derides public sector entities like the DMV ... they need to STFU

@ThirstenHowl He didn't show up last night and I was assured he will not be returning.

Incompetence is what keeps capitalism alive.
