how to keep on a debate & maintain your standpoints without getting aggressive

i've commonly had this problem throughout my life when debating my points of view with someone, maybe i'm just 'inept' i don't know.

i know clearly where i'm coming from and clear about my standpoints etc, but i get times where i can't think of words to say or how to put something across to that person, and that person is doing better than me at debating me? so then i got frustrated, wound up & angry, with myself and that other person - then because i found it a struggle to maintain a debate with that person and struggled with things to come back with, even though i was sure about what i was saying....i started to lose my temper with them, and got very aggressive? verging on threatening them??? because i was struggling to get the better of them in that debate? and that was my intention.

so what do you do in that situation? and how can i keep on calmly maintaining my standpoints and find ways to get my points across without losing my temper at that person and becoming full on aggressive with them?
