Why is it that most people have to endure suffering for themselves before they feel compassion for another?

Not always true, though, is it?
Sometimes suffering makes us turn sour so that we can never feel deeply again. And then we treat others poorly.
It depends, sometimes it makes us wider human beings, sometimes it ruins us.
