because they forget what a real dictator does and an Actually oppressive government is like.
A real dictator would have his political opponents killed, freedom of speech would be curtailed to the point it's non-existent (a la Egypt), a real dictator would suspend congress and legislate through martial law. A truly oppressive government would have a registration program for 'dissidents' , it would be shooting people in the streets en masse, they would simply Flatten, bomb, or burn down a gun owners home if he was dug in and 'fortified' and shoot him as he runs out.
We would be seeing children encouraged to tattle on their family for 'anti-americanism', they would bring back the house Un-American Activities committee of the 50s. We would be seeing checkpoints, nat'l ID cards or ID tattoos, we would see immigrants and homeless rounded up and executed, laws banning voting or due process.
When that begins to happen call me, as an anarchist I'll help tear it down, but also as an anarchist I'm not stupid enough to think we're living in a police state. A country filled with insane laws and gangster police, but not a legit police state. Orwell would have laughed in their face.

I agree with a lot of what you say. Some of these people need to do more research. Imagine what anyone who lived behind the old Iron Curtain would think of the freedom Americans enjoy.

As an anarchist, I'd like to weigh in. What storybooks do you read that advocate the anarchist principles? because I see a lot of collectivism (stories that center around working together) and socialism (stories about sharing and caring) but not anarchist.
