Because it is an opportunity to point and say "He is different from me and so he can't be an American". He represents the possibility of change and the very definition of a conservative is someone who doesn't want change.

in Obama's case, he's often the victim of all three harmful prides, race, nationality, and religion. he can't win. couldn't stand him his first 6 years, but he's earned my respect since, especially considering how he AND his family are viciously attacked by "americans"...and still they rise above it. it's astounding, actually.
