In rare occasions it's justifiable. Have you seen many newborn babies? Some are frightening before they ripen up a little. When your cousin or friend show off their newborn that looks gnarly saying "isn't he cute?" Waddaya say? No? You say yes and tell them how awesome the kid is. To tell the truth would only serve to hurt someone's feelings and possibly your friendship.
