Should people be allowed to obscure their identities online?

oneiric13
Well, what do you refer as "obscure" not saying who they're or saying who they are but staying as anonymous? Because yes, people has the right to their anonymity, I mean, lots of people use internet to say what they wouldn't say in real life, so some choose to interact even more honestly that with the people they've around but choosing not to disclose their face or the place where they live (which is my case here on EP, I'm even more honest, but I choose to stay anonymous, because I wouldn't be this honest with the people I already have to deal with in real life... but I won't disclose my face or where I live because of safety, safety to keep being honest, and safety for not being attacked).
.
That being said, do I agree with the one that have 80yo and say they have 13: yes and no; depending on why they're doing it; let's say this people is doing a research or even if it's a troll: then it's ok (remember: freedom of speech), BUT if this person who has 80yo and says that has 13yo is doing it to get ahead with criminal activities (connecting with other 13yo for sexual reasons, selling illegal stuff to young people, blackmailing and cyber-bullying others, specially young people): well this person deserves to be found by the justice and face the criminal system.
.
But even if I said that, for some reason (I'm 26yo, yes, in real life, I do disclose my age, I even disclose my real first name), I think people under 15-16yo shouldn't be meeting other people online or getting in illegal stuff. Why? well, simple: they're gullible, yes, older people is gullible too, but this are kids that should be under their parents supervision! One thing I found here (on EP) was the comment of this girl of 15yo complaining and crying she was beeing "cyber-bullied" because she stated in her twitter account she was against gay rights; well, people should get a grip: if they say something against other group they will face people who will tell them something back (yes, in a rude way) and you know what? it's ok! The same way a person has their "freedom of speech" to attack or say something against other group, the same "freedom of speech" has this group to say something back! and it's not cyberbullying, BUT she couldn't understand it, because she fell a "victim", why? because of her age, she wasn't in the capacity to be in front of a screen and face her acts, ERGO she or any person male or woman (or whatever they define themselves) under that age (even over that age) who is not prepared to be online SHOULDN'T BE ONLINE.
.
So, in my case I give a rat-ass if the people who I talk online tell me they're beautiful 20yo living in a beautiful mansion and studying to be a doctor when matter in fact are 500yo cyclopes with three heads and tentacles living in a cave AS LONG AS THEY'RE NICE TO ME ONLINE; that's MORE THAN ENOUGH for my friendship, anyway I don't plan to meet them in real life, the only interaction I care online is for friendship, even if it's for ranting about the world or telling me about their wonderful (or even miserable) lives, or even if it's just for recommending movies to each other.
.
So yes, I think people has their right to their anonymity, but if they are doing illegal stuff: then I hope they can be found, there's no anonymity once people cross the criminal line.
