Will the stray cat I've taken in instinctively know how to use a litter box, or do I have to train her?

She's only about 8 months old and actually a little "wild" too. She's used to eating insects, mice and anything else she can catch. I've allready started her on kitten food and she loves it. My old cat passed away a couple of months ago so I've decided to take this one in. Never had a "wild" cat before. I can use all the advise I can get.

Believe me she will know. It was a sad day for my then two when the tray went, I remember their faces looking at where it once lived. Don't think they ever hated me so much. Now I have just one, getting on in age, she makes us open the front door for her, so she can go in the front garden and heaven help us if we forget to let her back in. She cusses us out for awhile and throws dirty looks.

We had a boy cat years ago and he was as mean as hell haha. Yes just got a dirty look this morning, woke her up !! She is quite old, so it's allowed.

Well, at least it'll be a few years before I have to go through that.... lol...

Yes, really jealous, who can resist a kitten. Enjoy. I had mine from a mitten, before the children she was my baby. She was not too fond of them when they were small, jealous I guess. But now they are older, she loves them. More hands to tend to her needs haha.

Spend as much time handling her as you can. That way she Imprints with humans. We have a tortie that we hand fed as a kitten and by handling her she learned she was "part of the nest". The best cat we have ever rescued. Well at least the one with the most personality. Our other 2 rescues have their own specialties. I too , love happy endings ...enjoy your new friend

She surprisingly took to me right away. She jumped on my lap while I was sitting in my easy chair and at the computer and she was very comfortable. The only problem is she likes to "kneed" (not sure how to describe it) her front paws into me while she gets comfortable and with her paws come her claws digging into my legs. I'll get her declawed and spade as soon as I can. Needless to say that is very painfull to me.... lol....

The kneading means that she has adopted you! As her surrogate mom and ouch yes the little claws are just like needles

All cats know how to use a litter box...alot of kittens will use it asap after a short while. Current litter i have none of them played in the sandboxie they all started usen right away.

But we do have one that like to go outside if she can when it cold or raining....which might be when your WildCat ''may'' start using the indoor litter box.

She actually did play a liitle bit in the "sandboxie" when I first showed it to her. She started digging in the litter and even layed in it for a moment. I don't think she knew exactly what it was for, but she was very interested. She kept digging to the bottom to see what was there.

Cats instinctivly want to bury their stuff, if you make sure it knows where the litter tray is it should use it, just make sure you don't put it next to its food. Cats are very hygeinic and imagine having to eat dinner on the toilet seat without flushing it...exactly XD

No, no.... I keep her food and water in the kitchen and her litter box in a spare room where she can have some privacy. i wouldn't want to eat my dinner on the toilet and I wouldn't want anyone watching me do it either..... lol....
Gimmyboy
heh heh lol well said, I hope you two get along well you should do XD

my daughter took in a stray too.......the cat is still very much an outdoor cat.......so goes outside all the time.....even in winter
calicuz · 51-55, M
Thanks. She still goes outside too. I'm just not sure how to train a cat if I have to.
deltadon
well?! if it was me......i'd keep track of how soon she wants to go outside....after eatin/drinkin........pop the cat in the tray....hold her in there......give lots of praise....make it a good experience......really it's more about trainin the master, eh?
calicuz · 51-55, M
That's true about training the master.... lol....
Tgilly
