Has to be operating costs. The other option I've considered is that this shut down is just to determine user response to a site they're involved with closing down.
As they aren't seeing any real advertising revenue, and their other revenue streams must bring in next to nothing, I'm not sure they care much about losing visitors so it might be useful info for them to sell.

I don't know about that. Their total funding was right around $13M and their last round was a few years ago. That's definitely not enough to maintain a site that's a money sieve. Costs a lot to host and operate a site of this size.
Why aren't they seeing advertising revenue? Why couldn't they hire somebody who knows how to whip that up?
