The 1st Amendment grants us the right to express our thoughts and beliefs. Sadly contained nowhere within that amendment is the stipulation for class and respect. When you take a sacred tenet of another religion and not only disregard but mock it for no other reason than entertainment, you risk much.
Do you think the Constitution should compel respect? Would that increase of constrict freedom? Not everybody is in the slightest bit deserving of respect--and that certainly includes people who want to kill other people over cartoons!

"When you take a sacred tenet of another religion and not only disregard but mock it for no other reason than entertainment, you risk much." That is actually only true in regard to ONE religion.

I am appalled that you have greater disapproval of Pam Geller's event than of the attempted mass murder.

No, I don't think respect can ever be compelled. Tact, dignity and respect should be utilized more often though. And what I said is not try of only one religion. Do you think if other people drew cartoons of Jesus with a boyfriend (as he was never married) or aborted fetuses with funny punch lines or Mary Magdalene as Christ's nagging, sex-starved wife that certain factions of religious fundamentalists wouldn't take up arms? They kill doctors simply for performing abortions.

Don't get me wrong, NOTHING condones mortal violence against people. I'm saying that when you poke a bear, you risk a bite.
You're wrong. There have been as I recall three abortionists killed in the decades in which they have slaughtered millions of US prenatal children. They were not killed by "They" or by "certain factors" but by individuals acting alone. Do not imagine any effort was spared to try to find additional connections. And those incidents were quite some time ago.

Nobody was killed for the numerous Christian-mocking arts of work such as Piss Christ. Martin Scorcese made a movie blasphemous against Jesus, but he didn't have to go into hiding like Salman Rushdie.
