It was a sudden proliferation of multi-celled life on earth, after two and a half billion years of having nothing bigger than bacteria. Biologist Nick Lane proposes in his book "The Vital Question" that it happened because of a unique event: the fusion of a bacterium with an archaeon (a very small organism similar to a bacterium but different) which led to the evolution of cells with nuclei.
