I often answer them by saying, "I wonder does your Mother know you do this to people"...I usually get a thoughtful pause at the other end of the phone...

@Mooed78 Years ago, when I was briefly a telemarketer, someone actually did say that to me. I replied, "Yes, my parents know—this job helps cover my college tuition."
I think that’s when they realized they were speaking to a person, not just a nuisance on the phone. 🙂
