TIL Dropbox downloads a file called dbxsvc.exe which serves no purpose and isn't removed upon uninstalling

Dropbox refuses to make an official comment, leading many to believe that it is Trojan spyware, possibly put in place by a government organization. Users have reported that the file gains system access, perhaps through a rootkit, and that if one deletes the file, nothing in the Dropbox ecosystem breaks. Very fishy stuff.

We shouldn't be surprised.

I know I'm not. Why on earth would a company like Dropbox, which provides a very unoriginal service, get to a multi-billion dollar valuation? Oh, right, alphabet soup. It should be no surprise that Google rebranded itself as Alphabet Inc.
