How long does it take your laptop battery to completely die?

And by die, I mean your laptop can only function if it is plugged into the charger.
I've had my laptop for 4 years, and today, it started telling me "Consider replacing your battery." I know I can buy a new battery online, but it still sucks that this is happening. I thought I've been good about not keeping it on the charger for too long.

Hmm, if I recall the best way to make a battery last longer is to drain it down almost all the way every charge.

No I haven't played it. I think someone described it to me one time. Anyway, I just checked batteries online, and a new battery on Amazon is $20, so I'll probably order one tomorrow

@hiddenkitty: Make sure it's the right brand or it won't fit.

Yeah, It's the same brand, and I typed in the model of my laptop as well, and I see batteries sold that say they're compatible with my laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron, super common so I was able to find one pretty easily, even when mentioning the type of Inspiron

Over the years my battery started to wear out, so now if I leave it unplugged for any more than ten minutes, the battery percentage will drop from a hundred to zero in a heart beat.

I'm not sure what you mean by "charge itself off the mains."
But I understand that the laptop battery charges when the charger is plugged into the laptop. And when the laptop charger is unplugged, it can still function, but the battery's not supposed to drain in less than an hour

I actually work in Tech support and troubleshoot Mac computers. There's a way to check the life span of a computer battery.

I just googled it and found how to do that on Windows 7. I'll try it out and see what comes up

Ignore it. Just keep it plugged in (when in use) and you can go for years.. I'm on year 8 with mine..

But what if I need to use it outside of the house when I'm away from power outlets? I feel like a replacement battery isn't that expensive

Depending how much I'm using and what I'm doing with it, 5 to 8 hours.

No, I meant how many years until your battery starts to completely die and is completely reliant on the laptop charger. In other words, how many months/years until you see your laptop can only last ~10 minutes between charges

Ah, well my answer would still be it depends. I had one laptop for 8 years before the laptop finally stopped working altogether, but the battery gave out on it after about 4 years. That second battery was still working fine lasting me about 2 - 4 hours a charge when the laptop finally died and wouldn't work anymore. So that battery looked like it was dying at around 4 years too. I had a second laptop, where the battery lasted about 3 years. the one I have now works fine and it's battery lasts the 5-8 hours. So just based on that it looks to be around 4 years
