I think it evolved naturally... creatures that lay eggs, raise their young, mostly.. those that do tend to have more survive.. An extension of this is mammals that give birth to live young. These need care and nurture, that creates a bond. Some of those bonds are lasting, and thus family groups of interconnected, related individuals form.. Human beings are no different in that.

Yeah the fact that a tendency towards altruism benefits groups as a whole would definitely have some selective pressure.

What one can't do, many can achieve
