I am not in Australia, but the NBN is a great concept. The internet should be thought of as electricity and water.
Nearly 20 years ago, I insisted on direct point to point designs, thinking the cost overruns are worth it. I no longer believe so. The design complexities associated with point to point designs, will eventually cripple the whole thing.
Fiber to the node, and then either copper or fiber from the node to the individual home/business is not only more efficient and will provide better performance. This is the short version.
Wireless can be one of the options, in a hybrid fiber wireless network to offer service to all end points, from small to large.
