Isn't it crazy that (virtually) all the life on this planet is dependent on the radiation from a star?

Virtually?

I’m more concerned with the fact that once that bad boy goes red dwarf we’re dead anyways.
@Rokasu

Yeah. There's bacteria and whatnot which get their energy from geothermal vents rather than the sun.

But yes, that will be a problem if we survive that long
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@Pikachu Geothermal meaning from heat built into the earth? If the sun stops raining photons our core could easily cease up. That’s assuming the sun becomes a white dwarf instead.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@Pikachu Also I think you’re confused as to what radiation is. Radiation is deadly to living creatures. Our magnetic field from earths core protects us from the suns radiation.
@Rokasu

Would the earth's core go dark if the sun disappeared? Why?
Radiation is deadly to living creatures.
The dose makes the poison. The energy from the sun is radiation. And in fact it IS harmful to us when we get too much of it. WE all know that.
I'm not sure what your objection is here.
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@Pikachu We don’t receive the full blast of radiation from the sun. Calling sunlight radiation is like calling a teaspoon of water a quantity large enough to drown you. Yes people can get cancer from sunlight but it’s nothing compared to what it could be.

You need to give more details behind radiation disappearing. Like the sun just vanishes or it becomes something that no longer produces enough sunlight?
@Rokasu

No it's not like that. Calling sunlight radiation is like calling a cup of water water.
It is water. It's not enough to drown you but that does not make it anything but water.
The radiation from the sun is radiation. Our atmosphere protects us from some of it and sunscreen protects us even more. That does not make it anything but radiation. If you disagree then tell me what the energy from the sun is.
I know radiation has a negative connotation but this does not change the nature of what radiation is. I mean, do you deny that microwaves produce radiation because they cook your food instead of giving you cancer?
You need to give more details behind radiation disappearing.
Well you seem to be claiming that the thermal energy from the earth's core (and presumably the core itself) is dependent on the sun.
I'm just asking you to explain that assertion. Why is the earth's core dependent on the sun? Something about gravity perhaps?
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@Pikachu I knew you would dig that deep into it. Connotation matters. Maybe not to you but to some it does. Yes radiation is radiation just like water is water. But English is not the same English in all facets. I understand what you mean in the same sense you understand what I mean.

The honest answer is I don’t know exacty. All my research points towards the earths core becoming cold as hell if the sun disappears. Even then, mars supposedly has a molten core and it doesn’t support life, at least that we’ve noticed so far.

In short, yes, the sun determines living organisms or not.
@Rokasu

I didn't know that calling a spade a spade was digging deep. You told me that i was confused about what radiation is. I was just making sure that we were clear on terms.
Connotations not withstanding, radiation is radiation. Glad we could agree on that.
. All my research points towards the earths core becoming cold as hell if the sun disappears.
Well that's what i was asking you about. Like would the earth stop orbiting and then stop rotating? Would it start orbiting the next largest celestial body? Would the orbit of the galaxy be enough to maintain the core?
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@Pikachu Ugh, I have a coworker with the same logistics as you. Needless to say, they don’t exactly get along with management. I called you confused because radiation does have a connotation. You can ignore that all you like.

You still haven’t answered what exactly happens. Does the sun disappear? Like move to a completely different plane as if it was never here to begin with?
@Rokasu

Not too sure what you're complaining about. You made a fallacious statement, i disputed it and you subsequently conceded the point.
Cards on the table, I don't think you DID call me confused because of the connotation of radiation. I think you were confused about what radiation is because you thought radiation meant bad. But that's neither here nor there so let's move on.
You still haven’t answered what exactly happens
Yeah, like here we are on earth right now and then suddenly the sun is gone. Does the core of the earth go cold?
Rokasu · 36-40, M
@Pikachu Uh huh. If you want complete honesty I thought you were some joe schmuck asking the question to begin with. Why wouldn’t I assume your idea of radiation was that of the connotation?

Anyways. Go google it. You’re a smart person, it’s like three google hits away from the answer. You’ll find an offhand website or two but that’s the google facts nowadays anyways.

Now I’m curious why you asked this in the first place.

Correction: why you prodded my half drunken state when the question was rhetorical.
@Rokasu
Why wouldn’t I assume your idea of radiation was that of the connotation?
...why would you?
If i talked about a cup of water would you assume that i was talking about a sufficient quantity of water to drown you? Or would you assume i was talking about water?
No? Exactly.
So if i mention the radiation from the sun, why would you assume i mean deadly radiation? ( i suspect you were thinking nuclear).
Seems to me you're just trying to save face. Maybe not, but that's how it looks.
Anyways. Go google it.
You made a claim, i asked you to substantiate that claim. I even tried to throw you a couple bones by suggesting potential mechanisms for your claim.
Then you asked for clarification on my question and i acquiesced....you asked for clarification so that you could refuse to answer?

Sorry, this whole interaction just feels like a combative person trying to defend a position they didn't think through before wading in.
