I Witnessed Corporal Punishment At School

It was abolished a few years after I left and I thought it would lead to worse standards of behavior. I feel I was right. At least the good kids could get on with lessons and bullies feared authority then.

I feel I agree with you, Cathy, but also with @bijouxbroussard, if you see what I mean. When I was at school I think fear of the cane helped to encourage good behaviour, and occasionally boys were caned for good reasons. But it could also be abused, and some rules were arbitrary. For instance, if you were caught smoking in school uniform, even outside school, you were caned. Possibly justified, but hardly relevant to behavior in school!
