I Witnessed Corporal Punishment At School

I was among the first girls at the school that had been an all boy's establishment until then, the mid 1970s. There were women teachers also but they proved a pretty tough lot, some more than others. I suppose they had to be. They continued caning like before we arrived and the boys did not like us being there.

Living in Ireland I received corporal punishment at school until age 8. I still remember the fear of getting a question wrong or being caught talking out of turn. Thank god it's no longer acceptable

@ShonaV What did they do in Ireland back then? There was a slipper in class but that was for boys.

@lostluggage slapped on the palms with a stick or rapped on the knuckles with a wooden blackboard duster. One teacher in particular would drag pupils around the classroom by the ear & regularly threw a mug at their heads. She had a pretty good aim 😞

@ShonaV That sounds horrid. If used at all, corporal punishment should be done in a calm and orderly way.

We had a mad maths teacher. He used to throw chalk (frequently) and the wooden blackboard duster (occasionally). Could have caused a serious injury.

@ShonaV I also dislike punishment on the hands. If any part of the human anatomy was made for spanking, it was surely the bottom!

@lostluggage Lots of things were so different then - and you must be about 10 years younger than me.
