The head of our college music department was nuts, we thought !

I got a call from a classmate recently and we were reliving those days in Glee club. Our head, who was also the leader of our Glee Club, had recently passed away. He had been in his early 50s when I was 17, so he seemed ancient then, but in fact he lived to be about 100.

I remember meeting him initially. He read off our names in the music room.
"’Boulier’ ?" "here," the girl answered.
"’Booty’?"
"Boutté," that girl corrected him.
"’Broussard’ ?"
"Here," I replied. He rolled his eyes.
"Y’all are French ‘ns’, huh ? So now you’ll have an attitude ?"
"Well, we probably didn’t have one when we came in," I said. The class laughed.

Funny thing was, he ended up especially liking the three of us, gave us a lot of special projects. I was the pianist for the Glee Club, and both Boulier and Boutté were the most amazing singers, Boulier was our lead Soprano soloist. When our chorus, along with the singers from our brother school, traveled to France to perform, the three of us were the only sophomores who got to go. Boulier and I spoke enough French to be helpful; Boutté was fluent.

We had a wonderful time there. Boutté met someone there whom she married after we had all graduated.
And when we graduated, our head hugged us and told he "couldn’t have been prouder of three daughters". High praise indeed, coming from him.

Amazing what a lasting difference a great teacher can make on our lives. I was also lucky enough to have a music class in HS also with an older gentleman that wrote his own book on music theory fundamentals which he presented in such a way that I understood it and never forgot it.

Had many memorable moments in band class in junior high.

Our band took sweepstakes over three highschools.

Yet some of those moments just simply wouldn't be allowed today. The whole band both girls and boys together suited up in our school busses sometimes.
Lovely story!

I have to say that "Boutté" reminds me of the movie

Awesome story! I love that you were confident enough to speak up to his comment about you all having attitudes! 🤣
