That wait outside; studying the wall as if it interested me, hopping from foot to foot, hoping the Russians would drop the Bomb so I would not have to face the evil head. Then the door would open and the head would pop her head outside, give me a grim smile and invite me inside.
"Well, Amanda? Why were you sent here?"
She would hold out her hand for the note my teacher gave me in its sealed envelope. She would open in slowly, read the contents and shake her head.
"Cheek again, Amanda."
"Yes, miss."
The long pause while the clock ticked away my fate and I contemplated running out the door and escaping into the countryside. Did the Foreign Legion accept sixteen year old girls? Or could I stow away on a ship?
No; my fate was more immediate.
"Lift your skirt and bend over the desk," the headmistress said, lifting her cane.
@MandyMitchell Cheek or as we say "sass" is such a broad category. Odds are it was a totally arbitrary judgment call. Would you have punished someone who said what you said? I see almost all such adult complaints as more a sign of adults "pulling rank" rather than demonstrations of true leadership. Natural officers or genuine leaders never need to, even in emergencies.

@Alfred22 I was a bit mouthy! I didn't know my place - still don't!
