I've always gone to Mountain Equipment Coop (now Mountain Equipment Company, I think) and asked their advice. They carry quite a few brands, including their own, which is what I've used forever.
Though come to think of it, that might be just a Canadian thing, so that might not work for you, depending.
If MEC isn't a good option, I'd second @CookieCrumbs choice of North Face for something readily available and good quality. Also available at MEC, I think.

What is the purpose of the backpack? Carrying books or are you doing hiking and need to carry food and camping equipment?

Books and possibly laptop @hippyjoe1955

@MightyLion Oh Ok. I have never used a backpack for that purpose so I couldn't begin to tell you. I used to do a lot of hiking camping in my younger years and I had a number of backpacks some much better than others.
