Every time I've tried to fall into that bucket I get caught up on the side of the bucket between wanting to do it and wanting to run away and hide in fear.

It certainly seems like something that happens unexpectedly and can't be chased. Looking for it seems to work counterproductive, just like baiting pickpockets tends to not make them bite, but if you just act natural and not pay attention, they strike.
