what does 'being romantic' actually mean?

Everyone believes that everyone else 'knows' what romance is, how to express it, how to receive it, how to enjoy it, how to immerse oneself in it.

But what actually 'is' romance? And why is so much emphasis placed on it as a key component of human relationships, sex, intimacy, etc?
