That's a girl snake. She's a garter snake. The males have brightly colored stripes down the center of their backs.

@LordShadowfire You sure? Given its location (in the bayou, just off of a bulkhead) I assumed it was a water snake.

@LordShadowfire I bolted right after I took the picture, but I’d say 12 to 18 inches.
I do like snakes, but I am by no means an expert at identifying them.

@MisterMxyzptlk That's about how big a garter snake gets. But I can't say for sure, because I was not there.
