@HijabaDabbaDoo Paladins are holy warriors. Usually clad in plate armour and able to channel divine energy to heal people or harm the undead.
Hence no real world equivalent.
It's quite a solid class to start out with.

@Jessmari Well, I guess it might depend on the edition but I found them easy to play in 3.5.
You're pretty tanky, can do decent damage, and you have time to learn combat mechanics before your magic abilities kick in.
I think the only downside is balancing the points allocation for attributes.
