Dress styles for Church

How do you feel about people wearing jeans to Sunday church services? A lot of people including myself are wearing jeans especially members of my community (lgbtq) along with people that are not. Some of the older members of the congregation say we are being disrespectful to God for dressing that way. This is the same group of people that tend to ignore the lgbtq people in the church. BTW it is a United Methodist Church I am referring to.

When I see people in jeans, I'm happy they came.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Just4Me that’s how it should be
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
I always dress casual, it's what's in our hearts that matters, not what we wear, but if someone wants to wear a suit that's fine!!
@TheWildEcho right 😊
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
I’m sure your God would not care what anyone wore
As long as people don't dress with their boobs hanging out, or half naked and revealing, there's not one thing wrong with wearing jeans. These people should know that God looks at the heart, not the dress or makeup!! God's love and message is for ALL...not just SOME.

Just saying,

Once told a Christian who's young in the Spirit,
" if you were invited to attend a Wedding held at a Five-Star Hotel, your not going to go with jeans, would you?". (He never answered)

As we sincerely seek this thing called God, we learn and hopefully gain and comprehend.
Things I've done in my past, I dont do anymore.

For me when I physically attend and worship in 'His House' I'll dress accordingly, worshiping and praying in the 'Spirit'.
In other words paying my utmost respect as I come before the 'Almighty'.
@eyeno I think we should wear ‘our best’ when we come in his presence but I never, ever look down on people that dress down. And people in rags can be full of God. 😊

I know where you are coming from and I agree.
eyeno · M
@NoGamesTolerated ya ...,that young man I was talking about is just learning, like I am as I'm constantly trying to get closer to 'Him'.

If they attend that is a blessing, attending church ⛪️ is not a fashion contest
Fluffybull · F
Considering the falling attendance in most churches these days, I think the minister/vicar/priest etc should be grateful to have a congregation at all, however they're dressed.
Shannon27 · M
@Fluffybull Our minister and church staff have never said a word about what we wear. It is just older members of the congregation. If you notice the responses I am getting on here the 70+ people think it is wrong to wear jeans.
Fluffybull · F
@Shannon27 Ooh, that's my wrist slapped.....😳😆😱😱🙄
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Would you rather them wear jeans and attend or not go at all? 🧐

This attitude right here is why I practice my faith and read my Bible alone and do not attend a church or donate my money to it
ArishMell · 70-79, M
It's probably more a matter of respecting others in the congregation than God - who has rather more important things to think about than fashion! They dress more formally to attend church and think that's the only way, without seeing it's their not God's taste in clothes.

Though I fail to see your link between jeans and sexuality.
Shannon27 · M
@ArishMell In reference to your last sentence. The people that don't like for us to wear jeans in "THEIR" church are also the ones that don't like for members of the LGBTQ community to be in "THEIR" church. It's almost as though that certain group wants to control what happens in the church and the church minister and other staff member stay mum on the matter.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Shannon27 Oh, I see. A sort of self-defined ruling clique yet only members of the congregation... Very Christian of them.

@SW-User can you elaborate

Leather chaps and my gimp mask
Honestly, I'm more concerned about how people dress in fine restaurants or at a concert or a memorial service (in church or at a hall) than in regular church service attendance. And I try to set an appropriate standard.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Ask them to give you the precise reference of the passage in the Bible where God explicitly says jeans are forbidden/disrespectful in church.

Until then they can suck.. the holy water dispenser.

If the church is a special place, should clothing reflect that and not ordinarily clothes?

@CopperCicada Interesting dilemma.
@CopperCicada If you don’t, wear what you have and come…
4meAndyou · F
In my church, we are told to dress for church as if we were about to meet God, in person.

If that is how you would like to dress to meet God, go for it!
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
Interesting, I think those stuffy people are a lot of the problem in society and wearing jeans to church sounds great to me!
Shannon27 · M
@BackyardShaman At least I am wearing more than a fig leaf. Wonder what they would think of that. That is what Adam and Eve wore.
malizz · 70-79, M
Never wear jeans. but don't wear suits to church any more.
Shannon27 · M
@malizz I wear a suit on commune Sundays.
malizz · 70-79, M
@Shannon27 Once de rigueur; not any more.

@CopperCicada I would have felt bad too. It’s very shameful the church didn’t see the hypocrisy in their ways but they will see it when their time comes and I pity them.

I’m glad to hear you were more sympathetic. I couldn’t afford clothes growing up. Often times I had to buy clothes (mostly dresses bc it’s basically an entire outfit) from the thrift store to be able to get by.
