I Like Going to Church

Some to church repair,
Not for the doctrine
But the music there.

(Alexander Pope)

That's basically me. I've long gone to church at least most Sundays and actually at other times too. But hardly usually for religion.

I play at my parents' church sometimes when I'm home (as I did today in fact, Easter Day 2019)...I think my old organ teacher (who is the regular organist) is proud of me so idk....don't want to blow my own trumpet but it's fun and people are appreciative, and t it's a lovely instrument and fairly large for a village church (and in good repair) so you can play quite a variety of amazing music.

At college in London I am on the dep list for several church choirs (ie they suddenly need an extra soprano and I sing for that service, either random Sunday mornings but more usually an evensong which are lovely services, really quintessentially English but not in am in-your-face way, and amazing music), and sometimes on the organ at a few others...again mostly in other peoples' emergences!

I often go to evensong at Westminster Abbey on weekdays if I've got nothing else on. Not so much the religion itself but the rhythm of the liturgy and the music...

So I don't know....

I love going to Church. I don't know where formal religion comes into it for me. But it absolutely touches my soul.

That's so beautiful. There is a lot to religion besides the dogmas. It is sad to me that many people are turned off by those dogmas or by the pettiness and hypocrisy of some religious people, and cut themselves off from the whole thing.
I am not Christian but I attend the Easter and Christmas nighttime services at the local Anglican church because they are uplifting and beautiful.

@ThePatientAnarchist Exactly this <3
I also play the organ. It is an amazing instrument.
@Ambroseguy80 I was an organist at a few churches. It was great, and fulfilling to me, the minister, the choir, the congregants.

@SomeMichGuy that’s cool man.
@Ambroseguy80 Thanks! It was great to be able to guide a service and be responsive to its evolving feeling/mood (it's music, after all, so artistic freedom of expression helps give you the ability to adjust with tempi and dynamics). And a classical piano offertory...such a nice touch.

Then you get more from it than most. They go because they feel it's a duty and that they are supposed to, rather than enjoy it and feel good being there. 😊

I like this. Doesn’t matter why you go. The fact is that you go.

Although based in London I've yet to head down to Westminster.

Whilst musical myself playing brass I was interested to learn organ but ability to hit many keys simultaneously is not my strength so maybe not!

Agree sops are in demand. Although churches I'm at vary from band to organ to combination of both my wife sings soprano and is often requested to sing.
