By definition, a pagan is someone who believes in a false god. How can someone believe in a false god if there isn't one?

That is not correct. A pagan is not someone who believes in a false god.
A pagan is someone who is not part of a mainstream religious belief, mainly because of their social standing in the community.
Paganism is therefore regarded as the religion of peasants, whereas Christianity became the religion of the affluent. In Jewish communities, a pagan is referred to as a 'gentile' who is someone who does not practice Judaism.

@swirlie So while some pagans might not believe in a single, all-powerful deity, many do believe in multiple gods, spirits, or forces of nature. I myself have heard so-called Christians referring to non-believers as pagans. Therefore, they have used my definition of the word.

Christians refer to non-believers as 'heathens', NOT pagans.

@TheSandman01 Pagan believe in the true gods. Christians worship a false, composite, god.
