I have forgiven my parents but I never had even basic freedom when I lived with them, they’re extremely religious and used it as the go to excuse for any irrational rules; this is why I can’t stand organized religion and will never raise my child the way my parents raised me

@SW-User I had to forgive my mother as she had a mental break down when i was 14 and went into a hospital. They gave her EST and when she came out she was a different woman loving kind and a fantastic mother

My ex's strict religious parents let us live with them so I could finish my education. We agreed to accept their old-fashioned discipline for any violations of their house rules.
They loved me very much and wanted me to be the daughter they never had. After a violation ot their rules, I had to present myself bare from the waist down to be paddled by his mom. I was then told to remain bareass until after dinner when I would be firmly strapped by his dad.
I was raised by strict religious parents so I understood that they were coming from a place of love. I loved my parents and his very much so I wasn't at all shy or embarrassed to have my spanked bottom left on display in front of them. Birdie

My Brother-in-law is religious, very strict and very controlling.

In my experience, yes. Religious people are more likely to fall back on arbitrary, archaic rules for the same of tradition. Many of which aren’t even needed in todays culture.

My parents were on the stricter side, conservative.... while growing up, i knew what was expected amd my boundaries

@Kstrong We always knew what we would get if we did not do as we was told

I don't really know if there is a correlation there.
I know some religious families that are pretty laid back.
My family was always pretty secular growing up but I had a strict upbringing in a military family.

Yes. Even to the point that some end up killing their children.

@Renaci That both saddens and angers me as someone who adheres strongly to the sixth commandment.
