Religious people are not by definition mentally ill. The have different metrics for evidence and different reasons for belief than you or i but it is utterly asinine to describe this as a mental illness.
As for the belief in gods offering no comfort...lol well that is a delusional position to hold.
Whether or not the god actually exists or possesses any power to intercede in our lives, the fact that believe that it does and can gives people comfort is inarguable.
Belief that everything happens according to plan, that someone is looking out for you, that death is not the end and that you will see your loved ones again gives people comfort.
It would be absurd to argue that.

Some of them are. Many of them simply take them as a spiritual addition to the material reality.
I think you need to mature in your understanding of theists. They are not the other, they are not crazy. They're just people who have different beliefs than you do.
