How to become calmer?

I'd like to be able to express myself firmly but quietly, maybe like Foyle in the "Foyle's War" series. But I speak my thoughts too forcefully and repetitively, especially if in disagreement. I suspect it comes from an insecurity, a subconscious expectation of not being 'heard' or understood.

Who has experience of changing to a more calm sort of personality and how did you go about it? I'm a really old person. Been forming this groove for decades so I don't see it being easy to get out of.

Recently I have paid attention to some old interviews of common folk and it struck me how measured and calm people spoke

I wouldn’t mind becoming a bit like that, but like you it would be an uphill battle 😁

@SW-User Interesting comment. I see the same as you but it's an issue for me right in the present - meaning I literally can't understand the speed at which many people now speak. I often have to ask them to slow down but they don't know how to do that for more than a few words. I realize my age is a factor in this but I'm certain there has been a big change in the general pace of speech.
