According to Google...

Marriage comes from Middle English which was first seen in 1250-1300 CE. ... The main goal of marriage, earlier on, was to act as an alliance between families. Throughout history, and even today, families arranged marriages for couples. Most couples didn't marry because they were in love, but for economic liaisons.

@Sapio True, but this doesn't defeat the importance of marriage in society.

@Madeleine it is not marriage that holds the value of importance. It is the commitment two people make to each and uphold and you do not need to be married to do so.

Tell me if you were dating someone for a year or so and caught them cheating, would you forgive them because you two are not married yet? No, you wouldn't. Why? Because, he didn't honor his commitment to you to be a faithful partner.

The value of a good relationship starts from the day you decide to enter that relationship, not the day you walk down the aisle.
