Polygamy Should be re-embraced

Polygamy should be allowed, so long as everyone involved is of legal age, has consented, is not under coercion and are not hurting others. What consenting adults do is no one else's business.

Adultery is not illegal in most western nations and there are very few restrictions on whom consenting adults can associate and havesexual relations with. Why do you think it important that people can marry multiple partners?
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@SunshineGirl "Adultery" isn't illegal, whilst "polygamy" is. As polygamy builds, adultery destroys.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Therealsteve Adultery was illegal in the past because of the importance Christianity assigns to exclusive relationships. If you accept the validity of polygamous relationships, I assume you are not opposed to relationships with people other than the first partner.

The main objection to polygamy, so far as I can see, is that it places women in an unequal partnership.

@SunshineGirl A single legally aged male should be allowed to marry multiple legally aged females if all consent, yes.

To your argument from inequality in partnership, each one of us would like to argue unfairness or immorality toward things we disagree with, however if all are consenting adults, I don't see the issue.

@Therealsteve There is no reason for unfairness or inequality to be enshrined in law. This is the outstanding achievement of the modern liberal democratic state.

@SunshineGirl Unfairness would be to use state force to deny people the ability to marry in the ways in which they would like.

@Therealsteve
What about a female married to multiple males? Would you like to be in that kind of relationship? With the female being dominant over all her male partners?
gregloa · 61-69, M
@gregloa
That’s what I thought. As long as you the male have multiple females and you of course are dominant and in full control over all of them. Am I right?
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@gregloa If a consenting woman and several consenting men would like to engage in polyandry, then yes absolutely.
gregloa · 61-69, M
@Therealsteve
That’s not what I asked you. Would you like to be?
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@gregloa Me personally? I don't know, never tried it. I wouldn't stop someone else doing it if it made them happy, and I certainly don't think the state should stop them.

@gregloa No, I don't know, because I haven't tried it. What are you struggling to grasp, here?
gregloa · 61-69, M
@Therealsteve
What are you struggling to grasp?
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@gregloa You are the one who just asked me a question and are struggling to grasp what I've told you. Not that I think you are. You thought you'd get a gotcha moment assuming I'd disagree with polyandry, which I don't and so now you want to derail the exchange.

If an adult male wishes to marry several adult women all of whom consent; or if an adult woman wants to marry several adult men and they all consent then that's their business.

"that's what I thought" assuming something before I'd replied. You were looking to assume something and you didn't get that assumption confirmed when I did respond, and so you want to derail the whole thing. Pathetic.
