Why do you think politics is such a controversial and dividing topic and subject?
What's the most controversial political opinion you hold? Is it controversial/socially frowned upon to talk politics in your country?
In threads about politics, it is often brought up how it interests in politics and talking politics is seen as something bad, and something to avoid in social interactions. I was wondering, is this widespread around Europe? In Denmark, my experience has always been that everyone is expected to be able to talk about politics, and be able to discuss their opinions and such. You'd be seen as the outlier, if you, in a conversation, didn't have, or didn't want to talk about politics.
Politics is one of those things that you can talk about around the family dinner-table, or with people in bars, in friend-groups, at work, with your colleagues. It's one of those "safe" conversations, where you know that there wont be awkward silence, and that everyone can participate in.
It seems to be different in other countries, and comments on here make it seem as if politics is one of those topics best avoided?
Of course, if you have shit opinions, such as if you are a Nazi, it is controversial to talk politics. Because then your position is objectively shit, and you seriously need to be re-educated. Alright y'all, time for yet another one of these threads. Except this time we need some actual controversial topics.
If you come here and upvote/downvote just because you agree or disagree with someone, then this thread is not for you. If you get offended or up in arms over a comment, then this thread is not for you. And if you have a "controversial" opinion that is actually popular, then you might as well not post at all. None of this whole "I think marijuana should be legal but no one else does DAE?" bullshit either. Think that women are the inferior sex? Post it. Think that people ought to be able to marry sheep? Post it. Think that Carl Sagan/Neil deGrasse Tyson/Gengis Khan/Jennifer Lawrence shouldn't have been born? Go for it. Remember, actual controversy, so no sorting by Top either. Have fun. What extremely controversial thing(s) do you honestly believe, but don't talk about to avoid the arguments? People think politicians, celebrities and public figures who try to "not take sides" in controversial issues are deceptive and untrustworthy. Across 11 experiments (n=4,383), researchers found that not taking sides can harm one's reputation as much or more as disagreeing with your audience.
