They don't have to, but...I feel like, unless they're famous, why wouldn't they want to?

@SW-User All the same reasons anyone would, I suppose.

New tradition - married couples should select a new and unrelated surname.

@SW-User One example could be they are in business, a teacher/professor, or some other reason they have become known by their original name...they don't have to be famous.

@indyjoe Or they could simply like their name better.

@QuixoticSoul I guess I'm old-fashioned. I just think it's special to be able to take your man's last name.

@SW-User My wife didn't want to keep her maiden name, she wanted mine and that's fine. I'm proud, flattered, and happy that she wanted to share mine...there is nothing wrong or even old fashioned about it. Like I said, most women do change theirs to his. But neither is there anything wrong if they don't.

@indyjoe To me, it depends on the reason they don't. I'm not necessarily saying it's wrong, but in some cases, I think it indicates an attitude that can be seen as a problem.

@SW-User I can see your point if they don't do it for no real good reason or for reasons like they just don't like their husband's name...that could indicate attitudes that could lead to problems down the road.

@indyjoe Exactly.
