It requires a strong level of respect more and above the basic respect you have for each other in a relationship.
There will be complicated discussions to have, which you need to be open to, you may have to resist community pressure and if you decide to have children that's another landmine.
But it can work out and I know of couples (Taoist/Hindu) who have made it work
