Premarital blood tests in the USA

I heard this while watching the film - All about Eve - I had to find out why.

My first thought was, "Are the tests done to ensure couple were in no way related"?

Back in the old days, getting a marriage license always involved getting a blood test in every state in America.
It was an assurance by the government that you weren’t marrying someone who had either some sort of unknown venereal disease which could cause issues with potential unborn children.
But times have changed. Over the last 70 years, one by one, states have decided to do away with the blood test requirement as the medical industry has improved treatment techniques and legal decisions have passed judgments on the privacy rights of those who are dealing with the government.

One learns something every day.

Did the United States use to to require blood tests before a couple could marry?

Some states still do. DC, Mississippi, and Montana (only for females). New York requires a sickle cell anemia test for African-American license applicants.

The tests were not for unknown relatives, as they were used before DNA testing became that sophisticated - the tests were strictly looking for venereal diseases, rubella, and certain genetic disorders (such as sickle cell anemia and Tay-Sachs Syndrome).

@walabby So if you have sickle cell anaemia you can't marry in New York?

That sounds like racial discrimination.

My nan told me that in her day a young courting couple would visit the doctors to ensure they could both have kids. If there was any problem usually they didnt marry.
