Single mom with a black son

Just wanted to ask if people have any tips about how to navigate some of the challenges of race and differences when it comes to raising a black son as a white woman. I know it’s virtually the same, but will present some unique challenges. Long story, I’m happy to share, but it’s related to recent developments in my personal life.

I think as long as you love him and teach him, the color of his skin doesn't change anything, he should be okay.
I have good (white) friends that adopted and are raising a Native American child. It was a sort of rescue adoption of a compromised infant due due fetal alcohol syndrome. Gained a lot of insights just by witnessing their challenges and issues over the years. I imagine some similar issues with white parent and black child, or black parent and white child.

One important thing they did was to openly support that the child had a place and identity in both cultures. That involved maintaining an ongoing contact with the birth mother, family and tribe. There was a risk of being caught between two cultures that were/are very different from each other and not being integrated into either. The open and friendly relationship got ahead of any resentment or ill will that would have passed through to the child.

Also important that you have a sense of comfort and belonging in a black community. If you do or don't, that will rub off on your child who will need a sense of belonging on both sides of the race line.

The only thing to remember is he’s your son, color has nothing to do with it!!

@Quimliqer For some people, it's something they can't accept. But I think for others, it's more that they're not used to seeing interracial families. It's the same way there are people who aren't homophobic, but they still get taken aback when they see a same-sex couple. IDK, humans are complicated.

Biracial or black

My next door neighbor did that. The kid started college this year in Montana. He was the only black kid in the entire neighborhood. His father was never in the picture. When the kid put a "black lives matter" in their yard, nearly everyone else on the hill did the same. I've had a few conversations with the mom, but nothing indicated she had any challenges raising him.

Only interaction I had with the kid, was when he would ask to use my basketball hoop.

I’m a white father, raising two biracial kids. It’s had its challenges. I guess it depends on the scenario. I could see single father and single mother having their differences

@TransientTinkerer I appreciate your opinion. I’m sure there are differences of course, but just want to be prepared

Had friends who couldnt have children and they adopted to biracial kids but both looked quite dark and she was sometimes embarrassed by people who didnt know her for having black children. Its so wrong to assume or judge

@Likestoenjoylife I agree! It’s tricky because it wasn’t planned honestly

@Lavender19 i have no issues with it

I am wondering what type of challenges you are expecting to happen.
Interracial relationships are pretty common these days and I think that most people don't really think anything of it.

I have little actual experience with children of mixed races. Yet I have a bit of experience with mixed race couples.

One of my long ago roommates had a thing with black men. Yet had a white child of her own.

That presented a few problems with acceptance in a extremely conservative state.

This issue really is location dependent. So without that information it's hard to say what to expect.

Looking over your previous post however I suspect that you are just asking what to expect rather than had an actual mixed race child.

You certainly can't have one over three weeks. 🤷🏻‍♂

Depends on where you live... If you're american, eventually he will have to be told that some people will simoly not like him for his skin colour. That that is not his problem, but people will try make it his problem.

That it's hard.
