Of course they do. American morays and values don’t apply everywhere in the world, and wringing your hands about it won’t change anything.

@RedBaron Human rights are universal, they are also valid in countries which ride roughshod over them. Any law which contradicts the human rights is inherently invalid, no matter the country.

Different ideas about them seem to obtain in different times and places.

@onewithshoes No I think there is general consensus as to what is and isn't a human right. Those with "different ideas" are usually tyrants with blood on their boots.

@helenS Human rights are universal, but public policy, laws, and culture are ethnic and national, and it’s not yours or anyone’s job to dictate and prescribe for others.

Look at what a terrible job the UN does trying to make and enforce international policies.

@helenS The 'general consensus' seen in any given nation in any given century can be quite different from that seen in a different nation in another time, and such disparities cannot fairly be explained by the supposed influence of unnamed 'tyrants'.
