Why do some couples who are not happy wait until the children are grown to split?

It seems to me like they waste the good years of life being stuck in unhappy marriage!

for real, the only thing worse than divorce is staying together and forcing your kids to watch your relationship decay

I think it largely depends on the situation - if things are not amicable, then I agree that it can completely poison a childhood. However many people would prefer the inconvenience of an slightly unhappy marriage if it means being able to see their children every night.

It doesn't seem right to me either but I understand where they are coming from. They are trying to give their children a chance to grow up in a family with both parents under the same roof. I'd say that's admirable as long as they are not fighting in front of the children and making them wish if their parents were divorced, and as long as they are not taking their frustration out on their children.

They're thinking of the children being happy rather than themselves ...

@SaintAdelaide I think that varies with the situation .. it's not the best environment certainly, but probably often better than the alternative ... I'm guessing

@ozgirl512 I go back and forth with this thought often

@Letsjustbreathe I agree... Each case is different... As long as no one is throwing plates round the kitchen or sporing black eyes it may not be so bad compared to the financial hardships that women often have to endure when raising kids themselves
