How are the people you spend most time communicating with in SW, similar to those you spend most time with in the actual world?

Quite similar. But in person to person offline, sometimes people like to interrupt and interject and it's often hard to get a thought out from beginning to end. Online they are open to constructive dialogue and exchange of ideas, you can get a whole though out and allow people to respond.
