Do guys care if the girl pays for dinner/the date?

Yesterday my boyfriend drove down for the day (we live 3 hours from each other) so we went out to breakfast, went into the city, and then later went out to dinner. Since he drove down, I told him I'll pay and he tried to argue it, but I insisted. Do guys actually care about not paying?
