Heard on the news today that two mormons are going on trial for polygamy and it got me thinking,
what actually is the problem with polygamy? Why should it be illegal?

There are a lot of polyamory groups around; they even have conventions. Some of these relationships are long term, stable and apparently happy.
Personally, I think it's difficult enough to find one person you can partner up with. Relationships between two people are complicated enough.
When asked the question you just posted, a friend of mine answered, "Ain't got nothin' against it. Just never seen it work." Speaking as an old hippie, that's my take on it.
