Heard on the news today that two mormons are going on trial for polygamy and it got me thinking,

what actually is the problem with polygamy? Why should it be illegal?

If you read about the current Mormon communities, you'll see that it doesn't really work out that well for many of the women and many of the young boys. Girls are married young often to men much older but rich enough to afford multiple wives. Because these men have all that free labor available, they get even richer. The women often compete to be the favored wife. The communities are run by the older alpha males who often run the younger men out of town if they try to have a girlfriend or wife. Several women who have managed to escape this life have written books about their lives.

And that is where you are wrong. Those girls aren't marrying old rich men. In fact, many polygamous women are on government welfare. That is why polygamous people aren't pushing for legalized marriages. If it was legal, it would be harder for the women to get food stamps or other government assistance.
